Miss Whitlaw and Robin leave town, and as the fires die down, Windrider, Moon Shadow, and the Company work together with the Tang community to rebuild the village.ДЄfter all has settled down, Windrider decides to pursue his dream of building an airplane that can actually fly. Moon Shadow, Windrider, Miss Whitlaw, and Robin work hard to recruit help and save those buried in the rubble. When the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 hits, their neighborhood is destroyed, and many lose their lives. To his surprise, they respond, and Windrider begins building a model plane. With the help of Miss Whitlaw, Moon Shadow writes a letter to the Wright Brothers, asking them about building a plane. The plan works, and Moon Shadow and Jack declare a mutual respect for one another. Robin helps him by telling him that the leader, Jack, is afraid of blood, and advises Moon Shadow to punch him in the nose the next time he gangs up on him. Moon Shadow is teased and tormented by the neighborhood boys, and begins to fear leaving the stable. Moon Shadow and Windrider take to Miss Whitlaw immediately, and Moon Shadow becomes friendly with her niece, Robin. Windrider and Moon Shadow move into a stable behind a boarding house belonging to Miss Whitlaw. Knowing that he needs to leave the village to protect his son, Windrider takes Mr. Around the same time, Moon ShadowвЂ™s cousin Black Dog, a young man with a lot of troubles including opium addiction, beats up Moon Shadow and steals the laundromatвЂ™s money from him. Alger proves to be a good man, and tells Windrider about an opportunity outside of Tang village. One day, when Moon Shadow and Windrider are delivering laundry, they help a white man named Mr. He learns of his fatherвЂ™s dream when he met The Dragon King and realizes his love for gadgets and his dream of building an airplane. Moon Shadow learns how cruel the вЂњwhite demonsвЂќ can be as he witnesses looting and racism at its worst. His family, known as The Company, runs a laundromat together and are very close. All of my books have dealt with the outsider - from the aliens of Sweetwater to alienated heroes such as the Chinese-American aviator in Dragonwings.' Probably the reason why much of my writing has found its way to a teenage audience is that I'm always pursuing the theme of being an outsider - an alien - and many teenagers feel they're aliens. I now live in San Francisco with my wife, Joanne Ryder, and write and teach.' I received my doctorate in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where I wrote my dissertation on William Faulkner's early novels. In 1966, I attended Marquette University and graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1970. I continued to write and five years later I published my first novel, Sweetwater. At 18, my first short story was published - I was paid a penny a word by a science fiction magazine. While I was in high school, I discovered and began writing science fiction. Thus, I am able to pursue the figure of the 'stranger' both in my studies and my writing. Approaching that culture as an outsider, I have been fascinated by all its aspects - from its great novels to its children's literature, comic art, and science fiction. So I did not confront white American culture until high school. During elementary and middle school, I commuted to a bilingual school in Chinatown.
